Kel-Mar served as the construction manager for the complete gut renovation of an existing 4-story concrete framed assisted living convent and retirement facility for the Sisters of Charity in Riverdale, NY. In addition to adding a 2-story steel framed extension, work also included the installation of a new elevator, lowering of existing cellar slab, and the addition of steel and glass enclosed penthouse/solarium.  Access was also provided to a newly tiled roof terrace overlooking the Hudson River. Interior construction included renovation of the chapel, the creation of individual bedroom suites with private baths, a new dining facility, and a new commercial kitchen.  Doctors’ offices, examining rooms, nurses’ stations, and a special physical therapy/gym room geared to working with the elderly were also included in the interior portion of this project.  In addition, specialized details for the bathrooms included handicap access for wheelchair bound residents, as well as an area with a distinctive whirlpool tub intended for therapeutic use for the disabled.  This challenging project was performed in phases since the building was occupied throughout most of the construction process.  Essential to the success of this venture was the careful planning and exceptional sensitivity of Kel-Mar’s crew in an effort to minimize any disruption or inconvenience to the elderly nuns in residence.
